It was created by a massive explosive eruption of Mount Mazama about 6,800 years ago, during which it collapsed to create the caldera of Crater Lake.〔(Volcanoes of Canada: Distribution of tephra deposits in Western North America ) Retrieved on 2007-11-29〕 To the south, the Mazama Ash overlies the older Bishop Tuff.
